Buffalo Exchange

Secondhand First

CW TESS ADAMS, AD SOFI HERRERA

Buffalo exchange lacks brand awareness and a marketing strategy. There are almost no advertisements, and people rely on word of mouth to hear about their brand.

Challenge

Solution

Clothes are going to landfills, wasting away and polluting the planet, sometimes even before they are worn. We created a visually interesting campaign that brings attention to brand values like sustainability and waste reduction. We aim to reposition how and why consumers buy clothes by proposing shopping secondhand as the first option.

Caption: “I’m a college professor. I buy clothes for back to school too. I’ve reached a point in my life where I have everything I need, but I like getting new clothes to express myself. I know buying new clothes costs the planet, so this year I’m excited to come show my students my fully secondhand outfit”

At Buffalo Exchange, we value shopping #secondhand as the first option, without sacrificing style or self expression. It’s time to think sustainably about clothing options. #secondhandfirst

Caption: “Wearing business professional every day gets expensive. I wish someone would have told me I’d be spending a sum of my salary on clothes. Luckily, buying secondhand comes in clutch, and a lot of my suits are real vintage – talk about classy. I’m happy I can wear outfits that meet my dress code, are good for the planet and don’t hurt my wallet.”

When buying clothes for a professional setting, we know the struggle is real. When you #shopsecondhandfirst you get to 1. stay stylish 2. fit office etiquette and 3. help the planet by wearing clothes that are pre-loved. Sounds like a win-win-win to us.

Caption: “I used to care about fitting in and buying all the trends. Years later, I’d find piles of clothes in my room that I could practically organize by year – skinny jeans from 2012, a skater skirt from 2016 or all these owl necklaces (remember those?). It really was a wake up call, I barely even wore these clothes too. Some still had tags on them. But I knew somebody would be in need of them. Since selling to Buffalo Exchange, and then buying secondhand, I wear clothes that speak to me and scream for the planet.”

Candace, we got you. Whether you’re looking to buy, sell, or trade, Buffalo Exchange is the place for you. When you want to get rid of your clothes, we’ll take them so they end up with someone else and wasting away on the planet. Come stop by and pick up an outfit that’s yours.

Caption: “There are almost 2,000 gallons of water that go into a pair of jeans. Instead of getting new stuff, I take care of what I already have and shop secondhand. Since I’ve learned about how much clothing is wasted, I’ve learned how to sew, crochet, and knit the items I already own, or repair the clothes I buy secondhand which has saved me and the planet. Call me in 50 years, I promise my Wranglers will be in tip top shape. I will never buy a new pair of jeans again.”

Bella’s got something to say about her clothes – and the care she puts into them. At Buffalo Exchange, we believe that clothes deserve a second chance. The landfill shouldn’t be option one. Show us how you #shopsecondhand #secondhandfirst

Caption: “I wear the same outfits every week, and the best part is, nobody seems to notice. At this point, everyone I know has seen this jacket. There’s something special about wearing clothes for the planet’s sake, and not because I need to be cool. I no longer worry about repeating outfits, and if someone sees me in the same shirt time after time, that’s something I can be proud of. Rewearing clothes is cool.”

Jon is one of the coolest people we know. Rewearing is the way to go. What #secondhand outfits have you been wearing over and over? #secondhandfirst

Caption: Let’s talk about returns.

Shipping clothes back and forth creates greenhouse gas emissions. Even worse, they end up in landfills. That’s because it’s cheaper for brands to throw away clothes than to restock them.

At Buffalo Exchange, you can lower your carbon footprint and reduce your clothing waste. When you shop in person, you get to try clothes on right away. If it’s too small, you’ll put it right back on the rack, instead of having it sent halfway around the world – just so it can end up in a landfill.

There’s no going back now. Visit shopsecondhandfirst.com to learn more.

Caption: 100 pounds. Thrown out. Every year. Could you bench your weight in fashion waste?

If yes, pshh. That’s easy:

Put your sustainability muscles to the test. Stop by a Buffalo Exchange location and pick up one-of-a kind secondhand pieces. Get more outfit rotations in your closet, and express yourself at the same time. We’re all about collecting fashion-forward garments in a way that helps the planet. Just make sure you aren’t throwing away your gains.

If no way, not in a million years:

We’ll help you with the heavy lifting. If you’ve got too much on your hands, stop by one of our locations and trade or sell your clothes to get 25% of our selling price in cash or 50% store credit.

Buffalo Exchange can help you and your closet become more sustainable. Visit shopsecondhandfirst.com to learn more.

Caption: Most of what’s going to the landfill looks like it should be going back on a hanger. Why?

Because only 15% of textile waste is recycled. Clothes that are in perfect condition are being sent to landfills, where they can take up to 200 years to decompose. If it “doesn’t fit anymore” or it’s “just not your style,” send it our way. We have plenty of room, and we’re always up for experimenting with all colors and patterns.

Things to remember if you’re on the hunt for new jeans:

🌟Up to 20% of fabric is wasted in the production of denim clothing

🌟Cotton irrigation makes up 92% of the water footprint of a pair of jeans

🌟Denim production involves various harmful chemicals, including pesticides, fertilizers, dyes, and finishing agents that harm the environment

But don’t worry, we have tons of jeans that are already made and waiting for you to come snatch them – at no extra cost for the planet. Make the switch to sustainable denim and shop #secondhandfirst. Visit shopsecondhandfirst to learn more about clothing waste.

Caption: We know it’s crazy. Here’s how to keep yourself sane in the world of clothing waste and rising CO2 levels:

  1. Stop by and sell and trade your clothes with us. And if you really don’t want to get rid of anything, try wearing each item of clothing 30 times to reduce CO2 emissions and waste.

  2. Remind yourself that your clothes are durable, not disposable. Try switching up outfits to get the most out of what you already have.

  3. Know that someone else is in need of what you don’t want. Plenty of clothes end up going to landfills when they could be worn by people who truly love them.

Stop by a Buffalo Exchange location near you or visit shopsecondhandfirst.com to learn more about how to buy, sell, and trade with us.
